Somerset House

Posted on by earth

The brief:
Somerset House is one of Britain’s premier arts and cultural venues hosting prestigious events such as London Fashion Week, The famous Christmas ice rink, Film4 festival and other high profile art exhibitions that have included Dior and currently Ai Wei Wei.

The building and its surroundings have always been of historical importance, from its early connections as a Royal Naval base from which the British Empire was orchestrated, through to it’s current use as one of London’s premiere cultural institutions.

Somerset House has since become world famous for its stunning courtyard complete with the legendary dancing fountains, and the, rich array of exhibitions and events which it hosts. However, despite its reputation, Somerset House has always remained a hidden gem with its proposition unclear. Is it the ultimate venue to host arts & cultural events, or is it a hub for culture and creativity that plays an instrumental role in nurturing new talent. But then again, is it both of these, or something entirely different.

earth was tasked by the Somerset House Trust to reassess how they communicated with artists, sponsors and the general public through their website. As the main portal into the world of Somerset House and all events, activities and atmosphere, the Trust felt a that new website should work harder by seamlessly connecting visitors, exhibitors and events organisers in an engaging, interactive dialogue.

The idea:
Design and build an interactive concept for the new Somerset House website with a new look and feel that incorporates best build practices, structured information architecture to encourage a journey through the website, whilst adhering to the new brand guidelines.

The execution:
Inspiring. Engaging. Acessible.
